The New England region of the United States has a road less than 60 kilometers long, but thousands of visitors every day feel that even spending a week looking at the beautiful scenery on both sides of the road seems to be not enough. That’s the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This highway is famous for its scenic beauty, especially in the fall when the leaves change color and there are brilliant forests in the white mountain best places in America. To get to the attractions along Kancamagus Road, you can start from Lincoln or Conway, both about a two-hour drive from Boston.

Kancamagus, the most romantic street in America

From Conway, we drove south along Highway 16 for a short distance and then turned right onto the Kancamagus Expressway. The road winds up the hillside and starts uphill. Only 5 minutes later, there was a stop on the side of the road for visitors to start exploring the white mountain best places in America The autumn path is opened by a maple forest whose leaves have turned bright yellow with layers of crimson leaves. Near noon, it was a bit cold, the temperature was only about 10 degrees Celsius, but the sun was beautiful.

The iridescent sunlight shining through the gaps of the maple leaves makes the space even more brilliant. Step inside, about 20 meters from the road is a not very deep river called Swift River. On the riverbank, there are many large rocks scattered in the middle of the river, the riverbed is also full of pebbles. Thanks to that, from the shore, one can easily step on the rocks to get away. The river water is as clear as a stream of liquid glass weaving between the rock crevices. In the distance, across the river is a forest of interspersed pine and maple trees.

Yellow, orange, and red maple leaves interspersed with fresh green pine leaves give this place a colorful picture. In front, next to the roadside, there is a board introducing the road as follows: “Kancamagus Highway is about 55km long, winding in the forest of the White Mountain. This highway was inaugurated in 1959 and since then has always been a popular tourist destination, especially in the fall. Most visitors come here in late September, and early October when the forest changes leave. At that time, the area will be very crowded, even traffic jams.”

There is a roadside section with few trees, looking out into the distance, visitors will see rolling hills covered with alternating patches of blue, yellow, and red. After a short stop at Low Fall View Point, a riverbank also has huge rocks so visitors can sit and take pictures with a covered bridge named Albany in the background. The water flow is transparent, the car runs smoothly on the highway winding between the hillsides with spreading leaf arches, close together in the hot sun.

Now our car continues to circle uphill to conquer the top of Kancamagus pass. The Swift River on the right has disappeared. The road is more and more enchanting with farms, large and small lakes, and forests that have not yet shed leaves. Maple forests on both sides are more and more poetic. The highway winds uphill, on both sides of the towering trees, sometimes bright yellow, sometimes burgundy. The car stopped at the viewing point of a vast golden maple forest in the valley below, far to the horizon. The landscape looks so vast.

At noon, the sun slowly rises above the mountain peaks, releasing golden sunlight through the leaves of the trees like amber drops fluttering in the wind. The oak groves are dressed in a charming young brown color interspersed with the red-orange of the birch leaves. The forests overlap with brilliant autumn colors. When the car reaches an altitude of over 750 meters, the maple forest is sparser and snow appears, looking up to see mountains with snow-white peaks.

As if to increase the feeling for visitors, the road down the pass is zigzag and very steep. About ten minutes later, when the yellow of the pine needles reappeared, they stopped again at the hilly viewpoint on the south side of the road. In the late afternoon, the White Mountain region brings a new enchanting beauty with clear blue streams wooden bridges covered with dry leaves, the sound of the wind, and the rustling of leaves under each step.

The autumn afternoon in the forest is magical and unusual, the sunflowers shimmering under the clear blue sky or sparkling on the fast-moving water streams with yellow leaves. The carpets of crimson leaves are covered with winding paths, inviting visitors to step into the peaceful world of autumn.
